From School Psych to LEP: What You Need to Know Presented by Stephanie Hewitt, Ed.S., NCSP, LEP, ABSNP, Owner of Learning Pathways Educational Psychology PC and NECASP Past President This workshop gives school psychologists a clear, honest picture of what it takes to become a Licensed Educational Psychologist (LEP) in California, and what life looks like on the other side. Stephanie draws on her own path from district school psychologist to full-time LEP and private practice owner to walk through licensure, private practice realities, and the business decisions that come with it. Topics include why psychologists consider the LEP path, the full licensure process and exam prep, LEP scope of practice, and an honest comparison of district, contractor, and private LEP work. It covers the LEP continuum, from occasional part-time evaluations to full independent practice or a group practice, plus when LEP work might not be the right fit. The workshop also gets practical: setting up a business entity, insurance, office space, test kits, taxes, required forms, billing, marketing, and typical income for evaluations and consulting. It walks through the full IEE and private evaluation workflow and how to screen referrals for fit. It closes with key takeaways: school psychology training is highly transferable, there's a whole continuum of LEP work to choose from, and private practice isn't the right fit for everyone, and that's okay.
